The Big Buddy program of the Brigade Boys and Girls Club is in need of volunteers like you to help make a difference in a child's life. We match positive adult role models to children who need adults in their lives. A 2 hour a week commitment is all that is asked. On Oct 22nd I'll be having surgery done to remove some cataracts from my eyes; I'm new in town and have been having a rough time of it since I arrived in town on the 4th of July; I've been told: unless there is someone there 'waiting to bring me home' the eye doctor won't even start the surgery...
I had such a great response that with my limited access to the internet I'm can't answer everyone today But, I will just to say thank you all of you it takes a very special person to volunteer oneself for a half a day and even one very special person who would stay until I felt better THANK YOU ALL!!!

Cape Fear Volunteer Center Seeks Voting Booth Volunteers for Election Day for Kids Voting

Those interested in assisting with the Kids Voting USA program on October 28th in the Public Schools and November 4th Election Day are asked to call the Cape Fear Volunteer Center at 392-8180, leave your name and phone number.

Kids Voting is a national, nonpartisan, non-profit organization that engages students and families in voting and other civic activities. The program is unique because it combines dynamic classroom civic lessons with an authentic voting experience that replicates the adult ballot.

Currently Kids Voting USA is in 30 States and 25 counties in North Carolina, including New Hanover County.

Volunteers are needed on the two dates to support the children as they cast their ballots for candidates for President and others. The volunteers will hand the children the ballots and tally the results. We will need volunteers from 6am until 9pm, working 3 hour shifts. Interested individuals should call the Cape Fear Volunteer Center at 392-8180.

NATIONAL MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY- SURF FISHING EVENT
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
National Make a Difference Day (October 25th) was originally brought to Wilmington thanks to the vision of a dedicated Big Buddy trying to find a way to keep the program alive and find a source of funding for it, in partnership with the Director of the Volunteer Center who learned of National Make A Difference Day at the Points of Light Conference in Philadelphia and was determined to bring all of the different partners in Wilmington together to truly make a difference in Wilmington through a day of service. It well known throughout the world and is now growing to become a well-known Volunteer Opportunity throughout Southeastern North Carolina. This year the Volunteer Center was awarded a trip to Hawaii for their efforts for 2007�s National Make A Difference Day�s Contributions to the community. 2008 will surely be Great!
There are many events happening on this day and the proceeding four days on Pleasure Island (a Toy Drive, Volunteer Awareness, Beach Sweep, Kids Care Club Party and Surf Fishing Tournament , and associated events). The Surf Fishing Event proceeds go specifically towards the Cape Fear Volunteer Center�s Big Buddy Program. The Big Buddy program is over 35 years old and works to match youth with positive adult role models. The Big Buddies (mentors) in this program make a tremendous impact on the lives of the Little Buddies (youth).
Please consider working in Registration or Raffle Collection for this event and help make it a huge success! Although National Make a Difference Day is on Saturday, October 25th, this volunteer opportunity is for Friday, October 24th so that all persons can get registered for the Surf Fishing Event which begins at 12:00 midnight. The sign up slots will run from 1:00-4:00 pm, 4:00-7:00 pm, and 7:00-10:00 pm on that Friday.

Cape Fear Mini Grand Prix benefiting Duke Children's Hospital (UNCW Campus)

Volunteers are needed to help at the Cape Fear Mini Grand Prix benefiting Duke Children's Hospital. This is a fun and exciting day of racing, cheering fans, concessions & more. Volunteers (18+) will work inside the track area during the race - watching for wrecks and helping disabled race cars off of the track, checking in race teams at the registration table, clearing the track after the race,etc. All volunteers will receive an event t-shirt to wear on race day!
(Race cars are go-cart sized)

Event Date - October 4, 2008
Place - UNCW Campus - beside the Recreation center

We also need volunteers to help set the track up on Friday, Oct. 3 - 8AM-Noon.
