stop I feel compelled to at least make others aware
of her plight in case someone...anyone can help. Please
read this. It is not a plea for money. It is a plea for understanding
and compassion. If someone has a job to offer
or anything you want to give I am sure she would appreciate it. Let me tell
you about her. She is the sole provider for her one child and elderly parent.
Last year she was finally able to get her parent settled and
finacially settled, though she cooks for him every day. Five years ago they were
all homeless. She worked hard and even though she was ill at the time
she found a good paying job, got them a home and bought
a car. They prospered for a long while. Some of you may have seen the
interview Gavin did with her on the news. She is an outstanding example of what a positive person
can do with hard work. Well, a few months ago her job laid her off. Many folks are going through them same thing.
She moved to a smaller house and cut back on her expenses. She let them repo her car and bought a cheaper one on craigslist.
Now it needs a small repair that she can't afford so its parked, but she goes to ESC daily to seek work.
She is a secretary. Now a little over 300 resumes later I see some sadness, but she is still looking.
$250 per week doesn't go far when your rent is almost $700. She can’t keep extending out
her utility bills much longer. And of course they must eat. Recall she has health issues. I went with her to DSS
to apply for Medicaid. They told her she gets too much to qualify, but if she generates $4000 in medical bills she can reapply.
That would cause a credit rating that would prevent her from ever working again. Nice option huh? At least she did get it for her child. $44 dollars in food stamps will make a great holiday season. She stood in line for 4 hours to get him toys from Salvation Army.
She asked for employment help and training at ESC and they told her she didn't qualify, because
when she was working.....she made too much money. I am ashamed at the way our system is letting her simply fall through the cracks. As I sat next to
her at DSS and saw people chattering away on expensive cell phones, new cars, questionable immigration status, a ton of kids or a single kid, young or old and
I realize that everyone has a story. And I know that they are not going
to help her, because she worked. And it makes me angry. I know that she is not a lazy slacker or any stereotypical name that anyone could call her. She is still smiling! I can provide documentation for everything I have said. I just want to make someone aware. In case anyone can help them. She isn't a nameless face destined for the street. She is my sister, she is my friend,She is me and she could be you...
